Math Tutoring

  • Does your teenager struggle with stress or anxiety about Math and/or test taking?
  • Have you tried tutoring sessions and only got limited results ?
  • Do you sense that their stress, anxiety or lack of confidence might be preventing them from accessing their full potential in Math?
  • Do you worry about this affecting their college and career choices?

Who can best benefit from my approach

  • A student who has always struggled in Math without being able to make significant shifts.
  • A student who has fallen behind and now is finding it overwhelming to catch up.
  • A student who is particularly good at Math but struggles with test-taking, so their grades do not reflect their Math skill and talent.
  • A student that experiences moderate to high levels of anxiety that is impacting their grades, health, relationships, and self-confidence.
  • Location is not an issue; I can work with students locally and nationally. I have been tutoring online for 8 years now, with great success. I know exactly what it takes to keep the student engaged and to get full benefit from their time with me.

I can help your students save years of struggling in school. Plus, my approach’s long-term benefits will provide teenagers with coping skills for their anxiety and lack of confidence that transform their opportunities in college, and therefore, allow them to make career’s choices from an empowered place. This can have impacts on their life-time earning potential and sense of accomplishment.

During the scholar year, many students who feel stressed and anxious about Math and test taking do end up falling behind. I help them catch up with missed assignments and materials, fill in gaps that have accumulated. Within a few weeks they get back on track and restore a sense of empowerment. They usually start benefiting from their math class at school instead of constantly feeling frustrated and unable to follow along.

I have worked with different private and public schools in the area and I am familiar with the different curricula they offer.

During breaks and summertime, I offer two kinds of Math support.

One of them is teaching the accelerated summer programs offered by the school: Geometry, Algebra through Calculus as well as college level statistics calculus and numerical analysis.

The other support I offer during breaks and summertime is preparing students for the upcoming scholar year. This can be a combination of filling in gaps from the previous year(s), and an introduction to their upcoming math class, or one of the two depending on the student’s needs.

Given my experience with the curricula offered at different local schools, I either follow the school program strictly, or combine it with additional content that I perceive to be necessary to improve the understanding of the material.

All year long, we offer SAT/ACT GRE and GMAT test preparation, for both the math and the English sections.

Students will be given homework assignments in between their sessions.

Testimonials

“Our son began working with Mary at the start of ninth grade and in a new school. His math education had been somewhat non-traditional, and he began the school year feeling a mix of anxiety and dread. He had convinced himself that he was not a math student. Mary immediately evaluated the situation and began shoring up both his confidence and his skills. She worked seamlessly with the school to make sure that her tutoring matched the teaching methods of his algebra and geometry teacher. His performance steadily improved and by the start of the second term he was working at a level at or near the top of the class. While he previously avoided answering questions in class, he was now raising his hand and volunteering. What was remarkable is that this growth was felt not only in math class but it spread to other academic areas as well.  Our son feels that he has someone in his corner, a regular and reliable presence that reassures him that no assignment or section is beyond his reach. His grades have climbed demonstrably and he is now ready to take the next step in his math education. We think that Mary is a holistic tutor. She is able to go beyond the subject matter as she attunes to our son’s needs. She is an incredible resource that has really changed our son’s approach to learning and school.

I work with your child or student by:

  • Developing rigorous Math process skills so they start building autonomy right away.
  • Providing encouragement, positivity, and non-judgmental tutoring environment to build confidence, ease, and empowerment.
  • Educating them on the effects of stress on the cognitive brain so they understand the root problem and do not confuse their abilities or Math capacity with the effects of stress on any brain.
  • Teaching effective stress management tools that they can use when in stressful situations like test taking or having a conversation in a foreign language.

Highlighting their key strengths and barriers, so they can unleash their highest potential.

Testimonials

“Our daughter was faced with a daunting challenge this winter, as she was tasked with catching-up on an entire term of honors Pre-Cal in ten days. Without a second thought, Mary rearranged her schedule to accommodate our daughter’s tight timeline and together, they worked through all the missed material. During each session, Mary exuded warmth and her mindful approach took the fear and anxiety out of learning A LOT of material in a noticeably short period of time. She consistently went above and beyond, always making sure that our daughter understood the concepts, not just because it was her job but because she genuinely cared. Our daughter was pleased with her final grade but more importantly, she gained a great amount of confidence, understanding that no academic challenge was insurmountable. We are incredibly grateful to Mary. She de-escalated what could have been an incredibly stressful situation. Needless to say, our daughter adores Mary, and we could not be more grateful for her continued help and support.

Math and Anxiety

Learning Math often brings stress and anxiety. “I’m not getting it!” , “Why isn’t it making sense?”, “ I hate Math, it’s just not my thing.” This is often related to Math itself, or how a person perceives his or her ability as a Math student.

Stress and anxiety around Math learning are real challenges and may affect students’ lives and decisions in different ways. Some give up, others push themselves beyond their healthy limits, and in both cases they experience frustration.

Mindfulness and awareness about how stress affects our brain can help us with Math learning. I offer efficient and effective tools and practices to help students manage Math and test-related anxiety.
